So notes from the sewing room has been up and running for nearly 3 years and has given me the platform to start a new blog; one that is not a record of my work but instead just a place somewhere in the huge world of cyberspace where i can post videos and pictures and even just talk about fashion and pop culture in general that i find cute, weird, funny and interesting.

I'm currently reading up on how to make my blogs more appealing, but all this HTML hurts my head. I'll figure it out eventually, but for now, please appreciate the LO-FI ness of both of my blogs, and go check out this new one.

So i went home for reading week to do some work in the comfort of my mums house.

They live in the middle of nowhere, but conveniently half an hour's drive from the capital of Wales : CARDIFF!

So there i was, in the hills, deciding i would take my dog for a walk at the wood at the bottom of the garden , and lo and behold i find this:

EXTENDED RESEARCH PRACTICES: HALFWAY THROUGH!

ACTUALLY starting to find my footing with this at the moment.

Have quite a good solid idea, and i have a colour direction and branding sorted aswell as presenting it.

JUST NEED TO ACTUALLY GET IT ALL DOWN ON PAPER!

My theme is print and the 1940's, i've been looking at silhouettes such as Dior's New Look.

From that i began repeating the silhouette to make a print which i experimented with on fabric. (just cheap cotton but it was good to see how it all looked)

I'm then going to take shapes out of the fabric and applique them into silhouette inspiration ideas onto a blazer in 6 different parts; elbow, cuff, shoulder, neck, back and waist...

Back to school, back to a new year, but this year will be TOTALLY different.

I have decided that i am going to become a serious serious super committed fashion blogger.

Diary of an Intern - Day 12 - Wed 13th May

Busy busy busy

I arrived at the office early at 9.20am and started preparing the showroom for the next few clients. Turns out we have 3 today.

10am: My wardrobe (internet business)

12.30pm: Cruise (franchise)

4pm: Net - A - Porter (apparently the biggest seller of online clothes)

It all went very quick to be honest. Today was much better than yesterday in that i knew more of what i was doing so could help out better. The models knew the clothes better and could change a lot faster. all in all everything ran much smoother.

I felt i was also being acknowledged more in the room and was comfortable giving opinions. The girls from My Wardrobe asked for my name.

Tomorrow is a quiet one. I hope i get enough sleep tonight. think we're going out with Cat & Henry.

Diary of an Intern - Day 11: Tuesday 12th May

WHAT A DAY! so so so so tired.

It began with me heading to work for the much earlier time of 9am. On arrival, i found that i couldn't get in. I buzzed all the intercoms but it seemed none of the other staff had arrived yet. Esther wasn't answering her phone and then both the models turned up.

I managed to spot a cleaner inside the shop and persuade him to let me in. I spent about 10 minutes trying to tell him that i did actually work here before him letting me inside.

Once in i had to run round and make sure all the stationary in the showroom was perfect and all the selling books and folders were all out ready for the first client: Selfridges.

The first appointment was nerve wracking and i felt like a spare part for the beginning, but the ladies helped me feel at ease and we soon started the show. My job was the help dress the models, so give them the clothes in the right order and take them and hang the ones just worn back up. Both models were amazingly beautiful but one of them kept being really rude to me. She was so annoying but i just had to keep her sweet.

After Selfridges, we had an appointment with Hervia, who are a big franchise that run Vivienne Westwood in other areas of the country.

Hervia consisted of one man called Oscar, who was very lovely. (thankyou darling)

The whole day was a very busy one all in all, and i was very tired by the time 6pm came.

I rushed to get home because Henry and his friend and also Cat were coming to stay tonight.

We ended up rowing up the canal for an hour and then going to our trusty old friend The Lock Tavern.

Diary of an Intern: Day 10 - 11th May

Today is the day before appointments. I had to make sure that everything looked amazing. We spent most the day cleaning the showroom and i took pictures of all the garments.

My favourites include:

Then I had to make all the fabric books with small samples inside, and selling books, which will be spread on the tables for clients to browse through and help them with their order. turns out we only do these appointments for the big clients like Harrods, Selfridges etc.

Much later on in the day i had to make sure that everything was merchandised on the rails. I felt very much involved with this task and felt like i contributed a lot. Nuria and Esther asked my opinion on things and i helped them to the best of my knowledge.

I much prefer this side of fashion.

i bought an amazing dark green riding jacket with black velvet lapels and buttons. it is amazingggggggggggg and apparently retails at £400+ . Lucky me got it for £30.
I tried to find a picture on the internet but couldn't. I found this longer version of it though in red. It's literally cropped to just below the pockets.

In other news, me and Bec made another visit to the Lock Tavern on friday night and i spent money i wasn't supposed to spend all day saturday and sunday on Brick Lane. Bad me.

The rest of the collection arrived today, so we can now begin taking pictures and merchandising it all. Although we couldn't do it today so looks like its a job for monday.

Most my day was spent running through checklists and order confirmations with Charlotte, oh and I also had to box up all of last seasons stock in the showroom and then check off all the new pieces.

DREAM BIKE

Esther was out of the office today, so i was left some tasks to complete during the day. However everything was interrupted when the first samples for the precollection arrived. hurrah!

Me and Charlotte unloaded all the boxes and hung all the new items up on the rails. So many nice things, wish i was richhh. We checked them all off against an order confirmation slip. We were missing a few so, we're expecting the next box tomorrow.

At lunch, me and Charlotte went out together, it was very nice.

~Apres dejeuner (after lunch) i had to compare prices between all the previous autumn winter precollections for anglomania. I decided to do this by making a table and working out the average price for each type of item for each year. eg. dresses, coats, tops, blouses, jackets, trousers.

I was halfway through this when Nuria said i could go home early.

so off i went. I spent the afternoon then looking at old bicycles in Camden. I think i'm going to get one to take back to Leeds.

Its drawing closer and closer to the selling of the pre-collection and all the showrooms have all been sorted. We're just waiting on the samples to arrive now.

Here are some pictures of the showroom that we will be selling the anglomania precollection in.

Today i finished mailing the lookbooks and also double checked a few orders for selfridges. i then began pricing the precollection. In the Selling books, the prices are in euro's and are the wholesale price for each item. My job was to divide the price by 1.1 (euro exchange rate) and then times the answer by 2.7 (RRP is always 2.7 times the wholesale price). So for example, something that was 98 euro's as a wholesale item, would be 241 euro's in the shop. Gives you an idea of how much profit margin is made.

Back to work...

Today's jobs involved me looking through the potential client list from Nuria & Charlotte and finding out if they had a website. If they did, i was to print it off.

After lunch i was paired up with the french girl Charlotte who is also an intern. she doesn't speak a lot of english , but as i speak a little french, we could hold a conversation okay. She tends to laugh a lot at everything i say. she is so lovely . she's from the south of france and is staying in Marylebone in a flat on her own.

[Oh also, nick emailed Esther on friday and said he could no longer be an intern. guess i won't be seeing him again]

Anyway, together me and Charlotte wrote hundreds of envelopes and inserted different labels lookbooks inside. Esther has given me some lookbooks to keep, which is amazing. I shall be able to use them in my presentation i think. We also had to frank everything ready for the mailman.

Note to Self : Learn Italian and more French (it seems all the clothing in vivienne westwood, and other brands, are manufactured in Italy, and a close relationship is kept between the two. Everybody here can speak foreign languages. Plan for summer maybe?)

Diary of an Intern - 1st Weekend in LONDON!

Action planned weekend.

On the Friday me and Bec went to a bar in Camden called the Lock Tavern. It was really nice, Esser was playing upstairs and later on he came down to hang out with the "normal people". It was RAD.

Then on the saturday i met my long lost lovely old friend Katie and we went for lunch in Camden Lock (bad food!) and then i showed her my little house and then we walked along the canal for a long time. We went past the zoo and saw little baby water hogs/boars. they were so so so cute. We then walked to Regent's Park and sat in the sun for the rest of the afternoon.

Next stop: SHOREDITCH

10pm: I met my friend from home Amylee, and we went to the Old blue with her friend Anna. Anna's boyfriend was djing there so we pretty much spent the entire time dancing next to the dj booth, with amylee and anna requesting a lot of Classics.

The next morning i felt quite quite rough.
But Amylee called, and i went to meet her and Anna and we spent all of sunday afternoon trawling along Brick Lane and through Spitalfields Market. Best place everrrr. I picked up 2 vintage handbags, a jumper, a vest , vintage white heels and some pretty fab bedsheets.
We then proceeded to Wagamamas for dinner (seafood ramen for me) and then back to Camden where we spent most the night in the BARFLY.

Needless to say monday was a complete write-off.

I dragged myself out long enough to head to Camden cinema and see 'LAT DEN RATTE KOMMA In': or LET THE RIGHT ONE IN'. This film was pretty much amazing, plus the title comes from a Morrissey song, so it can do no wrong in my eyes.

However, £9 for 1 cinema ticket????? i only went to an odeon...

Diary of an Intern: Day 5 - 31st April

This morning i finished filing the potential clients in alphatbetical order. I did a little silent woop when i saw that a shop in Knutsford (my home) had made it onto the potential client list. Go Knutsford!

After filing i had to re-sort through the collection in the showroom downstairs and take out some pieces for Net-a-Porter. to do this i had to go through a list that Esther gave me and match the pictures and style numbers with the samples we had. I then folded them up and put them in a box and made a Booking out form for our file and for the box.

A booking out form is basically a list of all the samples that are being borrowed and when they are to be returned. We have to do this so that when samples are returned, if something is missing off the list, we know who is responsible. we had a pair of leggings go walkabout this week. I think it was Matches that had lost them. tut tut.

After lunch i sat in on a model casting for the precollection. The model is a brazilian girl, younger than me and taller and thinner. nothing like a model casting to make you feel terrible about yourself. haha. She had to try on 3 of the samples. she looked amazing in them,i have to say, and Esther decided to book her. This will be the model that i have to help dress and get ready when the precollection starts next week.

The more i hear about the precollection starting, the more excited i am getting.

Diary of an Intern: Day 4 - 30th April

I'm pretty much getting used to life working here now. My sleeping pattern is actually into a good routine and i spent my first day in our new house last night. It's situated right on the edge of Regents Park by Primrose Hill, and we have a canal backing onto our house. The house is actaully amazing and i'm so grateful to Guy (Hills) for letting us stay. It takes me approximately 40 minutes to walk to Conduit Street, so it means i dont have to get up at 7.15 anymore! yeah!

I now wake at 8am, shower, breakfast, and set off for work at 9.

I spent a lot of money last night aswell, buying lots of new dresses. i am very excited about strutting them around.

Okay, back to business.... TODAY i got to grips with Excel and spent pretty much the entire day making tables of clients and whether they had websites. We also had a bit of a crisis at the office, turns out the precollection that was supposed to be delivered today, wont be ready for another week. Esther is fuming. It means we have to cancel a weeks worth of appointments with people like Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nich's etc. BaD BAD NEWS :(

In between all the commotion, i managed to ask Esther how she managed to get to where she is now. Turns out she used to work in music PR, and then she went to Fashion PR, and then she got a job at the shop downstairs, and then was promoted to be head of Anglomania in the showroom.

The other staff in the showroom, Nuria, Vito, Christina & Charlotte all got to where they are now, coming from Retail experience.

One thing i've noticed about the showroom is, i haven't really put to use yet anything ive learnt on our course. It seems i use more of Bridgets Enterprise module than i do of Fashion.

Don't get me wrong, i am really enjoying this experience, i mean Vivienne Westwood (hello?) i just sort of wish i was more involved with the creative side. Esther says that when the collection starts, it will get a lot busier and a lot more exciting. I'm very much looking forward to this.

Diary of an Intern: Day 3 - 29th April

~Most of the morning today was spent binding together all the bibles with the binding machine. It actually takes so much longer than you think to punch all the holes, because you can only do like 15 pages at a time, and in a book of about 300 pages it goes on foreverrrrr. After this, Esther and all the heads of the lines went for a meeting and i was left to answer the phones. This was very very scary, as a lot of people that call the showroom dont even speak english, most of the time its Italian because we have all our products produced in Italy with a company called GFM.

I tried to find out some information about the company and came up with some crazy results.

DID YOU KNOW? .... that Vivienne herself only designs gold label, (the premier line) and that red label and anglomania are all completely designed by a team of designers, all taking influence from gold label but never actually having any direct contact with viv herself? Apparently she doesn't oversee any of it herself, although she does help a little with MAN because her husband is the chief designer for this line and she likes to give him input. This means that most of what you can buy in shops under the brand Vivienne Westwood (Red Label & Anglomania) have not actually been designed by, even overseen by vivienne westwood at all. CRAZY!

THE BIBLES

Today i was introduced to the BIBLE.
it is a very thick book made up of all this seasons collections and all their selling books.
eg. Gold label, selling book, Red label, selling book, Man selling book, Anglomania, Selling book, Accessories, Selling book.
This book is handmade every season and made up 5 times for the 5 different departments.
Luckily for me, i had the job of doing it this season.
Esther showed me the order in which everything had to go and the rest was left to me.

This took me ALL day. and i haven't even binded them together yet. bad times.

Diary of an Intern Day 1 - 27th April

First day at Vivienne Westwood.

When arriving i was first introduced to a fellow intern called Nick who would be working alongside me. Nick was studying menswear and tailoring at LCF and we probably spent the first hour chatting about the pains of fashion and how much work we had whilst unpacking some boxes. I was glad i had someone else with me, it took the strain off a bit.
Esther then took us on a tour of the showrooms and introduced us to last seasons collection and all the selling books that accompanied it. The selling books are little books of flat pattern drawings of the garments along with style and order numbers. Esther said if we ever got stuck and couldn't find something, always refer to the selling book.

Our next task of the day was to check in some samples that had been sent out to matches for a press photoshoot. This involved us running down a booking out form that had been previously filled out and checking each sample that had been booked out, had been returned.

After Lunch, me and Nick had the job of marking on a huge map of the uk, all the stockist of vivienne westwood. We had to colour code the collections with the whereabouts of the shop.
This took us right up until 6 when we were allowed home.

Fashion is tiring.

Innovative Cut - What a Disaster

Coming near to the end of innovative cut, i think i managed to spend about 10 whole days 9-6 in uni in order to make up for the time i missed.

Finalising an idea, i began to first realise the design in paper and then in calico to make a successful toile.

When i was making the toile, i decided to make it as perfect as i could with linings and everything else, however when drawing up a pattern and then translating it to calico, i often found that things would not match or fit.

The final calico toile was made up and because i had done it as perfectly as i could, all i hoped i had to do was copy it using the patterns i had previously made, into the black fabric i had chosen.

The whole process took a lot longer than i thought it would and my final prototype was quite rushed and because of this i dont think i finished it as well as i could.

When it came to inserting the invisible zip, i managed to sew it in ok and make it look neat, however i thought it would be neater to overlock the edges of the zip on the inside, but instead the overlocker, actually got caught in the teeth of my zip so i had to unpick the whole thing. This left me with a scraggly edge and bits of cotton in the teeth that made the zip hard to fasten. When trying to make the zip go easier, i actually messed around with it too many times and the actual zip intself managed to unravel and start to leave a big hole.

Now not only did my zip not zip up, i also had a scraggly edge and hole.

In light of the situation, all i could do was try and tidy up a bit, as i had no time to replace the zip.

I ended up handing the prototype garment in, in a condition i dont think was very good or professional and i dont expect to do very well. In addition to this, because i had spent so much time trying to sort out my zip, the finishing of my sketchbook was not completexd and so i also had to hand that in too, in a way in which i was not happy with.

This project has taught me that i need to plan my time MUCH better. I should always leave time to spare in case something goes wrong.

I am very disappointed, and i think this mark will bring down my overall grading.

Research Practices - New Briefing!

Monday 16th March

Research practices has now had 2 lessons, it involves us using our critical studies essays and research to design a collection that involves political messages that relate.

For my essay i talked about the way our eyes perceive the world around us, including art. I spoke about how the way we see things usually stem from our unconscious.

For the beginning of my research i started looking at the "abject" and what people don't like to see in our society. I started looking at the work of Paul McCarthy, Melanie Fullen and Shigeo Fukuda.

First time i've ever made anything on iMovie. The idea was that the video is supposed to be your pitch for a spot at London Fashion Week, showing all your target market and concept and marketing ideas.

Its a bit rough, but the best i could do for a first timer.

Make sure you have your volume on too

Elective- Visualisation & Illustration

This elective was NOTHING like i'd thought it would be.

The first day we had to take a cartoon character from popular culture and redraw them in every different way you could possibly think of. I picked Totoro from the studio Ghibli film "My Neighbour Totoro". I found this task quite easy and managed to produce lots of work for the day.

Day 2 involved us taking a magazine and highlighting or cutting something out in order to show something. ie. in a beauty magazine cutting out all the noses to represent plastic surgery rhinoplastys. I decided to pick up on the BIG vs Skinny debate and i began by taking a magazine and every advert for a brand, i cut out the model as a very heavily overweight silhouette, i then took the cut out and turned the cutout into a scarily stick thin person, i would then stick the thin person inside the fat silhouette. I continued doing this all day so by the end i had a small collection.

Day 3 & 4 - These days were 2 day tasks in which we had to take a film and recreate scenes from that film however which way we wanted to.

I chose the film Breakfast at Tiffanys, and chose 9 scenes in which Hepburn has a memorable outfit on. I then made miniature replicas of these outfits in 2D and photographed them against the original scenes.

Fashion Concepts and New Media - 4th March

Have been so busy busy busy, haven't had time to update blog so now i've handed in everything, i've managed to make time to put all my work up.

The fashion concepts module was apparently a brand new module for fashion and we were the first year group to try it.

Personally i found the module really interesting and i really enjoyed most of it, however i just wish we were given more time, i felt it was quite rushed and i ended up giving up a lot of my spare time to finish all the work. I hope this is reflected in my mark.

I learnt a lot from illustrator again when using it to construct my venue, and also i dabbled in flash animation for one of my marketing campaigns.

I decided to hire an SLR camera from photography as well so that i could take better pictures of my concepts which could then be adapted for logo's and animations.

Fashion Concepts and New media 12th Feb

Line-up finished! finally!

Now need to start promoting.

I found that when printing out my lineup the colours varied so much, i ended up printing it out 4 times before i got the colours how i would like them.

In future i should change my colour selection in the beginning to the same ones set on the printer.

Fashion Concepts & New Media - 2nd Feb

This is probably my favourite brief so far...

Since briefing date i researched phantasmagoric and my own version of the word included dreamy sort of freaky forest type settings with illusions and ghostly images. The nature aspect featured quite strongly and i decided to take some of my own pictures.

Here i recreated a jewellery photoshoot from Dazed & confused.

After taking these pictures which i'm really happy with by the way, i experimented with drawing onto them, sewing onto them, drawing from them, using a variety of different materials.

The results are starting to develop loads and i'm beginning to apply them onto figures and start designing outfits. My final line-up should be finished any day.

I also think that some of the illustration could be used in the promotional side and maybe within the logo?

Something with illustration on the invitations could be cool aswell.. i shall have to go back to the drawing board....

Innovative Cut - 2nd February

Because i'm all fluey i haven't written here for a while :(

But basically, innovative cut is going fairly well. I began by researching my words from an issue of dazed and confused which actually had so many pictures i just ended up using them all and experimenting with them.

It was a picture of Hussein Chalayan's new designs that inspired me to start working with non fabric materials such as rubber.

The picture in the top right is the rubber dress that made me start to think about how i could recreate this. Moulding some sort of shapes out of plastic was an idea i preliminary had but then decided to think about using liquid latex.

The mould i decided to use is an ice cube tray because i think the cubes could be a very interesting 3d concept to add as a collar or sleeve detail. The idea is that this latex would be attached to fabric so i will have to continue experimenting with fabric folds to make impacts elsewhere on the garment. Although i am using an ice cube tray, i also have various other objects such as a lemon squeezer and art palette to make different shapes.

When thinking about the fabric cut of my garment i experimented on a half scale mannequin, ideas that could be used are shown in these pictures, however i think i need to redo it again because my research probably isn't ready for experimenting yet.

Vivienne Westwood interview! 12th JAN

Had my interview for the vivienne westwood showroom placement at 2pm. SO scared.

The night before i was practising what i'd say about why i love fashion, why do i like the brand? strengths etc.

Went to the shop on conduit street and one of the girls got the lady.

She then took me upstairs and showed me around the new showrooms and sat me down and told me about what the placement entailed.

She thensaid i'd got it.

I WAS SOOO HAPPY but wasn't sure if i'd misheard her or she was talking about someone else so it wasn't until i was on the way out, i asked if i'd got it and she said i had and laughed.

She also sent me a conformation email below which actually says

Hi Rhiannon

It was nice to meet you today.

I am very happy to offer you the position of intern for the Anglomania Precollection SS10 which will be showing here at the London Showroom from late April to mid May 2009. I will confirm the exact dates to you when I have them.

We look forward to seeing you then.

Finished everything, i combined loads of my enterprise with DRT so ended up making some photoshop images and animations and a website.

DRT was actually one of my favourite subjects so far. I think i must be quite a quick learner on the computer.

Getting a mac in about 2 days so i'll be able to practise my skills.

Bit late but evaluation of Business presentation

So our presentation was put together by Bec whilst me and Cat focused on our DRT brief. However the night before, we all went to Bec's house and added more info and sorted out who was saying what. We had to practice serveral times to get it to stay under the time but we managed to cut things down so it all would fit. I'd been doing some pictures, animations and the website for our business as my DRT so we had to put all those in and comment on them.

On the actual day we were very nervous, and Bridge actually failed someone before ours so we got even more worried. When it came to it, we were actually ok. I held up the dress i made and just smiled whilst i spoke.

After the presentation, Bridge gave us feedback saying that it was an absolute delight and we'd obviously researched well. She said we had a lot of passion for the business and it showed.

Hopefully this means we'll get a high mark!

DRT- Dreamweaver

Making a website

Dreamweaver was the final thing our module had to offer us in the form of workshops. I've quite enjoyed them to be quite honest. I've not really found anything really hard, its just all very time consuming. Hopefully in the next few modules i'll be able to apply my CAD skills and use things like flash and dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver is fairly straight forward, we only touched on the surface, basic website designing, and i managed to get quite a good grasp of it.

I'm going to design a simple website for my own practices for the module portfolio. I found websites like www.sixsevenphotographic.com are very effective.

Critical Studies - Essay preparation

Monday 8th Decmber

Critical studies has been pushed a little bit under the rug recentlybut the proposal is due in tomorrow so have spent all today researching my topic.

I have decided to write an essay addressing:

-If our environment influences the way we think?
-How past theorists have taken a psychoanalytic view on art

-Freud's theory of the ego and the id

-Why people will interpret different meanings from similar things

-Why maybe art is sometimes a form of repression

My essay title is :

"How does the way we perceive a work of art stem from our unconscious psyche?"

So far i've began to read "Leonardo: a memory of chldhood" by Freud and also "Art and psychoanalysis" by Peter Fuller.

Its actually quite interesting what some of them have to say about paintings and sculptures.

Moses and the Michelangelo has had so much debate all over its expression and the way the body has been sculpted. its pretty crazy.

I've also been reading into why the mona lisa smiles.

It all makes sense to me somehow, and i don't feel like writing the essay will be a chore. Which is a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry good thing.

Had our lesson in flash about 2 weeks ago but haven't had time to blog about it yet.
Previous to this lesson, my housemate had learnt flash for her course and had told me it was really really hard so i went into the lesson a bit scared.
However, by taking step by step notes i managed to understand it quite well, and ended up having a bit of fun with it.

Application of Design -OVER!

Its finally over.... We did our group presentation yesterday and handed in our work.

For my paperwork i wish i'd done a few more ideas sheets and spent a little longer making the development a bit more up to scratch but i was very happy withthe outcome of my illustrations which were redone like 8 times!

Our presentation ran quite smoothly and i think we pulled it together really well at the end as a group. I completely was stressing out on the weekend, as i still hadnt had everyones full set of work to add onto the powerpoint and i wasn't sure how much time i'd be able to spare for the presentation when i still had all my own paperwork to do. But it was finally sorted and our meeting on sunday night in bourbon was very much needed.

My final range plan looks something like this...

Its a bit basic but the idea is for the range to be layered up and you can't really do that with a huge mix of quirky patterned items.

Here's my favoruite illustration, although this was changed for a different background and made to look better for the hand in.

After a fairly successful go at flash last week, i felt a little bit invincible. This weeks photography session was held in the studio and it was really useful to learn all about the different features on an SLR. The quick tutorial in lighting was also really helpful, hopefully i should be able to come down in the future and make use of the facilities.

Range Planning

As soon as we got in today, we were told we were doing a timed task in which we had to produce a first draft of our range plans in colour on A3 by 11am.

Being not ready for this stage yet i panicked a little, but in the 2

hours i managed to succesfully come up with mine. I didn't have time to add colour an fabrics so it was in black an white but the feedback i got was quite positive.

On looking at everyone elses ranges i could see that a lot of people in our class had stepped up their game an were producing AMAZING drawings and designs.

In my private action plan i have decided to work on my range more, experimenting with the colours etc.

At the end of the lesson i asked Caroline for her feedba

ck and she told me to maybe not play it so safe with h&m and add in a real "fashion piece" to my collection, also play around with seams and pocket details more on the basic things like jeans and track pants.

Learning how to draw with illustrator was much harder than i thought it would be. We spent the morning playing around with the ipod adverts and tracing with the pen tool. This was time-consuming but the more we practiced the better i found my self getting.

In the afternoon, we drew a shirt from scratch as in a flat pattern drawing way. By only drawing half the shirt, when we finished we simply copy, pasted and reflected it to come up with a perfectly symmetrical shirt.

First lesson was on Friday and this module already looks gooooood!

I can't wait to start messing around on Flash and Illustrator.

On Friday we were taught how to use iMovie and how to edit video's as well as how to hook up a video camera and how to film.

I found the Chanel carousel catwalk show and imported it to imovie and then spent time editing it around and making it my own most the lesson.

Hopefully i will be able to apply this to other modules.

I'm thinking that when its time to start making our presentation for Application of Design the things i have been taught in this module will come in very useful.

I'm so glad i chose pathway A

Enterprise & Innovation

So far, we've had various lectures discussing what makes a successful business, how to run it, advertise and everything else.

If i'm being honest Enterprise really isn't my thing and at the moment i feel this information is useful but could be given to us in our final year when we may be thinking about starting or running a business.

At the moment i'm taking all the notes down and listening to everything bridget tells me but i don't see how i can apply it for a while. The brief talk about giving a presentation about what we have learnt in regards to starting a business but i'm finding it quite muddled, and after speaking to other members of my class, i've realised i'm not the only one.

I hope Bridget runs through the brief soon, before we're just expected to just do it.

Critical Studies so far...

In critical studies so far we've been attending lectures on various subjects and then having meetings to discuss the topics.

So far we've talked about; Marxism, Freud & Psychoanalysis, and the Gaze and their effect on Art disciplines.

Of these lectures so far i think i have already started deciding to write my essay on Freud and Psychoanalysis, this is the lecture i have found most interesting and i think when relating it back to art i have more to talk about. I have previously taken A Level psychology so feel i can use my previous knowledge in helping to get the best out of this topic.

The rest of the subjects covered so far such as Marxism, i found a little bit dull, so when faced with writing an essay i don't think i would be able to put much enthusiasm in.

My next step is to go to the library and take out some books to start reading up for my essay.

However i am going to keep an open mind, as there are still a lot of topics yet to be covered and i may change my mind if i find something more interesting.

The start of a second year - Application of Design

First module we were given was Application of Design, and after working on preparing for this during summer, i felt i was ready to begin the year well.

We were assigned groups and given our market level that we'd chosen.

My market level was lower mass market and the brand; H&M

Lesson 1 : 29/09/08: Creating Moodboards : Working in a group i found this difficult, because i felt like some of the suggestions made the board look unprofessional and messy and so i had to tactfully ask if everyone thought we should do something after every suggestion in order for people to voice their opinions truefully and to get the best out of all of us and to get the best moodboard we could achieve. By the end of the lesson we'd discussed our brand thoroughly and from our images created a moodboard between us that we we were happy with, we agreed to come back the next lesson with more research sheets relating to our moodboard.

Lesson 2: 06/10/08: Assigning Ranges: Using our strengths and weaknesses, my group discussed the possibility of what ranges each of us would take on. We looked at our research and which member was appropriate for the different types. I eventually decided on Mens Urban & Sportswear. I saw this as a bit of a challenge as i'd never done menswear before and in my research i had a lot of sportswear type ideas coming through. I had to admit though, i was thinking that i might not have been able to get a lot out of it but i thought i'd give it a try.

The rest of my group decided on Women's Contemporary, Directional Women's Tailored, and Women's Urban & Sportswear. Together we would each start taking our research to the next level and looking at focusing it more for our chosen range.

Lesson 3: 13/10/08: Research Evaluation: Evaluating our research meant looking at what everyone in the group had done and trying to find our similarities and pull it together to come up with a running theme, this theme also had to be relevant to our moodboard. Our group found we had continued using the themes of futuristic and brights, which is also one of the upcoming trends for the season we were designing for. Our next step was to continue looking at this research and bringing our ideas out of it further onto ideas sheets. At the moment we are working quite independently in order to get the most out of our ranges, i think when we start introducing range plans we will begin to work more as a team. We'd also decided on fabrics being used, and most of us now have a good grasp on what our ranges are going to use. My fabrics involve lightweight material for windbreakers and airtex, as well as simple favourites like jersey and cotton. My sampling to be done over reading week will help me to get the most out of my fabrics.

Lesson 5 : 03/11/08 : Design Development : I'm a little bit behind with my development at the moment, and am only about halfway through. In our group discussion we made an action plan and decided to arrange a group meeting for wednesday 5th, in order for everyone to catch up and be at the same level. On wednesday we're planning to look through our development and starts choosing key pieces for each of our ranges. This will be chosen by everyone in the group and hopefully we will all immediately spot our best pieces to use.
